Viagra - No separate Viagra for women: Sildenafil is UNISEX!

The common concepts regarding Viagra go nothing greater than the drug being an aphrodisiac and that it makes men go all night long. A few women, going through menopause and experiencing hormonal changes causing plummeting libido levels tried it to bring back their lost interest in sex. Some of them experienced an effect; some did not.

All that got started two quests: Whether Sildenafil is suitable for women and if it has a female counterpart; Viagra being a kind of newfound sexual potency, has made women getting suspicious about their men. So Flibanserin was introduced – the Viagra for women – to help a large number of pre-menopausal women becoming sexually active once more.

The perfect example of A Pill for Everything – culture!

The women’s Viagra was found to treat a diminished libido but without messing with the hormones. The female Viagra was catching up fast, but was stopped in October 2010 when U.S. Food and Drug Administration presented facts.

Let’s see how the women’s Viagra worked. Female sexual desire is a result of interactions between multiple neurotransmitters and sex hormones (this is why most women give psychosocial factors a lot more importance than men) that are modulated (moderated too) by distinct brain areas. It’s the balance between the inhibitory (serotonin) and excitatory (dopamine and noradrenaline) neurotransmitters that determines sexual desires.
Flibanserin, or the Viagra for women, was a treatment medication for women suffering from Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder. It is a 5-HT1A receptor agonist and targets all the brain areas preferentially affected by antidepressants. This restores back the balance between inhibitory and excitatory stimuli. However, on June 18, 2010 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) went the way of the negative votes of the federal advisory panel.

So many women are now taking the regular Viagra (Sildenafil) as a substitute after an open study by American Psychiatric Association (H. George Nurnberg, M.D., Paula L. Hensley, M.D., John Lauriello, M.D., Lynda M. Parker, M.D. and Samuel J. Keith, M.D.). Nine women suffering from sexual dysfunction were given 50 mg dose of sildenafil one hour before sexual activity, before which, the dose was increased to 100 mg. A significant reversal of sexual dysfunction was noted in all this time.

Women taking Viagra report an increased vascular engorgement inside the vagina, enhanced clitoral sensitivity and also an improved lubrication, which they lost temporarily to the anti-depressant medications leading to a decreased libido, decreased lubrication, pain during intercourse and little or no orgasm at all. Sildenafil complied with these women and stopped relapse to a great degree.

Sildenafil thus proves it’s also the Viagra for women as far as antidepressants stay the cause behind sexual dysfunctions. Sildenafil doesn’t conflict with antidepressant medications and is a helpful alternative in recurrent cases of depression requiring prolonged treatment. An occasional (mild too and transient) headache and dizziness are not that great prices to pay for a steaming session.
